Biography
Cally Jordan has civil and common law degrees from McGill University (LLB (JD)/BCL) and the Université de Paris I (DEA, en droit des affaires) where she studied with Jacques Ghestin, Geneviève Viney and Paul Lagarde. Prior to her legal studies, she obtained a MA from the University of Toronto.
Admitted to practice in Ontario, Quebec, New York, California and Hong Kong, she spent several years with Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton (New York) where she practised international corporate finance. She also practices international commercial arbitration with the ICDR (New York City). Professor Jordan has spent over twenty years advising governments and market institutions worldwide on financial regulation and corporate governance, primarily under the auspices of The World Bank.
She spent several years as an advisor to the Financial Services Bureau of the Hong Kong government and is the author of proposals for a new companies law for Hong Kong. She was also an adviser to the UK government on the Companies Act 2006.
Currently, she is a member of the American Law Institute, the European Law Institute, the International Academy of Comparative Law and the Experts Panel of P.R.I.M.E Finance Foundation (The Hague). She is a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for International Governance Innovation and the C.D.Howe Institute as well as an Editorial Board Member , Capital Markets Law Journal (Oxford Academic). In the past, she has been a working group member at the Council on Foreign Relations (New York City) and the inaugural Lord Woolf Fellow at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (Wassenaar).
She has held full-time faculty positions at McGill University, the University of Melbourne and the University of Florida. As well, she has had teaching visits and fellowships at Duke University, Georgetown Law Center, the Max Planck Institute (Hamburg), the London School of Economics and Political Science, the British Institute of International and Comparative Law, and Harris Manchester College, Oxford University (where she gave the Michaelmas Term 2018 Commercial Law Lecture). Most recently, she spent a semester in 2019 teaching at the Centre for Transnational Legal Studies, a Georgetown Law Centre program based in London (UK).
In 2021, Professor Jordan will be teaching at Yale Law School.
She is the author of International Capital Markets: Law and Institutions (Oxford University Press, 2014), the second edition of which will appear in March 2021.
