Biography

Ailbhe O'Neill completed her LL.B and doctorate at Trinity College Dublin. She also attended Cambridge University where she completed an LL.M as an awardee of the WM Tapp Studentship in Law. Ailbhe teaches Corporate Governance and Bank Regulation at the School of Law at Trinity College Dublin. She has published widely in these areas both domestically and internationally.  A Senior Counsel at the Irish Bar, she has advised on and acted in relation to a broad range of legislation connected with the banking crisis in Ireland including the Anglo Irish Bank Corporation Act 2008, the National Asset Management Agency Act 2009, the Central Bank Reform Act 2010, the Credit Institutions (Stabilisation) Act 2010 and the Personal Insolvency Act 2012 and was appointed as legal advisor to the Commission of Investigation into the Causes of the Banking Crisis in 2011. Ailbhe has also appeared in the Court of Justice of the European Union where she has argued cases concerning principles of Company Law and Bank Rescue. She has advised the Department of Finance the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment on a range of issues related to corporate governance and corporate rescue. She has represented the Central Bank on a range of matters including the Inquiry into persons concerned in the management of the Irish Nationwide Building Society (concluded in 2024) and was recently appointed by the Supreme Court to argue a case concerning the interpretation of the Credit Services legislation. She is a member of the TCD Gift Acceptance Committee and the CHARM-EU Task Force which is due to report on governance arrangements in April 2024.
