Professor George S. Georgiev
Biography
George S. Georgiev is an Associate Professor of Law at Emory University. He will join the University of Miami as a Professor of Law in June 2025. His research examines topics at the intersection of corporate governance and securities law, including questions about the design, performance and evolution of the SEC disclosure regime, the rise of private capital, the breakdown of the public-private divide, and the development of systems for sustainability accounting and disclosure. He teaches Business Associations and various upper-level business law courses and was the 2024 recipient of the Provost’s Distinguished Teaching Award at Emory University.
Professor Georgiev’s scholarship has appeared in leading journals and peer-edited volumes and was recently awarded a Ford Foundation research grant. He has testified before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Financial Services and the U.S. Senate Climate Change Taskforce. His work has also been cited by the Delaware Court of Chancery, in Congressional testimony, in SEC rulemaking releases, by SEC Commissioners of both political parties, and in numerous submissions to the SEC from investors, corporate governance experts, academics and others. In 2024, he was appointed to a four-year term as a member of the SEC Investor Advisory Committee, which advises on regulatory priorities and investor protection and market integrity initiatives. He is a frequent speaker at academic and industry conferences and has provided legal commentary for media outlets such as the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Financial Times, The Guardian, Bloomberg, Reuters, NPR, CNN, and the BBC.
Professor Georgiev holds a J.D. from Yale Law School. He is a member of the New York bar and, prior to entering academia, practiced corporate law with a focus on capital markets, private equity and M&A matters.
