Professor Poonam Puri
Biography
Professor Poonam Puri is an internationally recognized expert in corporate law, securities law, corporate governance and financial regulation. Appointed to York University’s Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto, Canada over twenty years ago, Poonam Puri is a full professor and former Associate Dean. She earned her LL.B. degree from the University of Toronto where she was the silver medalist, and she holds a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree from Harvard Law School.
Professor Puri’s work is academically rigorous and firmly grounded in the real-time of policy-making. It is for this reason that governments and regulators in Canada and internationally, including Industry Canada, the Ontario Securities Commission (OSC), the Canadian Senate, the Wise Persons Committee on Securities Regulation and the International Finance Corporation of the World Bank, have sought her expertise. Professor Puri was recently appointed by Ontario’s Minister of Finance as the Expert Advisor to assist with the review of the credit unions sector. Professor Puri was also appointed as one of two research directors of the Canadian Ministry of Finance’s Expert Panel on Securities Regulation, which led to the proposed common securities regulator for Canada. Professor Puri has acted as an independent expert on significant securities litigation cases and class action matters in Canada and the United States, and she is a former President of the Canadian Law and Economics Association.
Professor Puri is the recipient of several significant research grants on topics including piercing the corporate veil, capital markets enforcement, auditor liability, and the Equator principles and environmental sustainability. Her recent book, Back from the Brink: Lessons from the Canadian Asset-Backed Commercial Paper Crisis, examines the financial crisis from a Canadian perspective (University of Toronto Press, 2016, with Halpern, Cakebread and Nichols).
In 2015, Professor Puri was recognized as one of the top 25 most influential lawyers in Canada by Canadian Lawyer Magazine, and she is the former recipient of Canada’s Top 40 under 40™ award and Canada’s 100 Most Powerful Women Award.
