Biography

Filipe is currently a Research Fellow in Governance, Leadership and Directorship at Henley Business School, UK. He is a Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy, UK Institute of Directors, and of the International Corporate Governance Society (ICGS). He works as a researcher, lecturer and consultant having worked with FTSE 100, government and third sector organisations in the UK and other European countries.


Filipe directs a large research programme: “The Independent Director in Society”. This programme examines the question of board and director independence and its impact on board effectiveness and company performance across a number of sectors including sports, higher education, further education, charities, health and commercial organisations. Filipe is also the principal investigator (PI) on a research project with the Quoted Companies Alliance (QCA), examining governance in fast growing firms (AIM-listed).


He is developing a project on shareholder activism and engagement and ESG integration with the ICMA Centre for Financial Markets in collaboration with key industry partners.


He has received recently the outstanding reviewer award by the Strategy Division of the US Academy of Management, and in 2016 he received a competitive grant for case study writing by The Case Centre.  


Filipe is a guest lecture at Henley executive education courses and the Henley MBA. He teaches on the Masters in Financial Regulation with the UK Financial Conduct Authority and convenes / teaches three modules of the newly approved MA in Board Practice and Leadership.


Filipe research interests include all aspects of board of directors, CEO leadership, Top Team dynamics and strategy formulation and execution are  areas of interest. Filipe is also interested in institutional and hedge-fund activism, government-business relationships and turnaround / restructuring research.
