Herman Daems Joins the Board of ECGI

November 24 2020

ECGI is delighted to formally announce the appointment of Herman Daems to the Board of Directors. Mr. Daems was appointed to the Board by the General Assembly of the ECGI members on 15 October 2020.

Herman Daems is Chair of the Board of BNP Paribas Fortis (since 2009). He is emeritus professor at the Faculty of Economics and Management of K.U. Leuven and former Chair of the Board of Governors at KU Leuven (2012 - 2020). He has chaired the Belgian Corporate Governance Committee, which sets the governance code for boards of listed companies in Belgium. Mr. Daems was a member of the executive committee of the VBO/FEB, the Belgian employers association and holds several board positions. He received the hereditary title of Baron from his Majesty the King of Belgium in April 2014.

Speaking about the appointment, Professor Lucrezia Reichlin, ECGI Chair, said;

Herman's combination of academic, policy and professional experience is an invaluable benefit to an organisation like ECGI which sits at the intersection of all three worlds. As a scholar Herman has made important contributions to our understanding of the modern industrial enterprise and business groups. Writing as a practitioner, his recent book ‘Insights from the boardroom’ has been rightly described as a ‘must read for every board member, shareholder and manager’ and I would add ‘for anyone interested in corporate governance.’ We warmly welcome Herman at this pivotal time for ECGI.”

Mr. Daem's appointment follows the two appointments earlier this year of Lucrezia Reichlin (Chair) and Yupana Wiwattanakantang which together mark the beginning of a period of ECGI Board refreshment. The re-election of a number of longstanding board members will also protect the institutional memory of ECGI as it transitions through the challenges of 2020 and embarks on an exciting new programme of activities in 2021.

Ends.
